In January 2000, alpha-x digital AG was founded. The company started development of the DOCBOX software. Beside this, the company also started selling copiers and later on MFPs and office supplies. After 18 month, a first version of the DOCBOX was ready to ship. The company decided to sell a wooden case with an integrated server and UPS. On this case, a touch screen was placed. This case was located next to the digital copier and the user could select the scan destination on the touch screen. In the beginnig this was exactly the right concept and sales started pretty well.
As time changed, the retailers started to also sell PCs and no more wanted to get complete cases. Windows XP appeared and also Windows 2003. A new concept was needed with a different entry from the digital copiers (multi device support), mounting of the server PC in the server room instead next to the copier and an easy to install software for Win2K, XP Pro, XP Home and 2003.
The founders of DOCBOX GmbH decided to finance and to develop this version of the DOCBOX software by themselves. Only the user interface (HTML,JAVA) had been taken over with a few changes. The rest was developed completely new.
In December 2005, alpha-x digital AG and DOCBOX GmbH signed a contract to cross-license their own parts to each other with certain restrictions to each party.
The most importants are, that alpha-x digital AG is allowed to sell only to office equipment retailers and system solution providers while the high volume OEM sales was handed-over to DOCBOX GmbH.
Also DOCBOX GmbH does the further development and resulting future releases (except bug removals) belong to DOCBOX GmbH exclusively.
